Otis GEN2 - 03/11/15 01:05 AM

Anyone servicing these outside of Otis? Looks like our friends across the "POND" are taking them....Any independent states side?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/11/15 01:38 AM

I would imagine it's a matter of time! What's it been now 12-15 year they have been out?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/11/15 01:48 AM

I have seen TKE and Schindler take them on service. I believe each company has a tech department that has independently developed tools and support. I'm not sure any tools are on the market for the latest GCS controls.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/11/15 03:18 AM

otis won't even give the mechanic's full access to the new equipment!! you can do test and such, but very little adjustments with out having to call and get it unlocked.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/11/15 03:52 AM

we have 6 of the older gen 2 on service, we are a small independent. They run great. they are a little intimidating to work on, but knock on wood, they are very reliable. wait for the post for help tomorrow, ha ha.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/12/15 01:21 AM

We just looked at one that was part of a 2 car service contract. The belts might be a problem to check? How do you monitor those? This is an older Gen2

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/12/15 02:44 AM

otis left the belt monitoring system in place. after losing the contract, they tried to remove the belt monitoring system, however the building put up a fight, and 2 years later the system is still on the job monitoring the belts.

I use to adjust them. smile

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 12:18 AM

Today I had lunch with a friend. We use to work together 15-20 years ago. He was working on a 3300 (yes he's a schindler man, but still a good guy. Ha!) today. He said schindler also won't give out full access as well.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 12:31 AM

Were an Independent and we have quiet a few even the new stuff that are blue tooth communication. I was told that if you go to Allie Baba or some such China type e-bay site you can buy Otis tools that work very well. So far we haven't had to do that.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 01:20 AM

3300? trained on those also.

Elevatedone

I was sighting an example of an other then Otis limiting the information to their men in the trenches.

At least I hope that is what your questioning?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 01:54 AM

Interesting...When I worked for one of the Majors they never supplied tools or prints on foreign equipment. I worked through a bunch of problems before ever seeing a world tool. Asked for plenty of favors from the competitors which the guys always helped. Now on my own I really don't know if I want to take on the challenge with everything else going on. It is interesting...that's what was fun about the trade....not this time based schedule? I guess eventually we will start taking this stuff on as it gets older. How do you get parts for this stuff?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 02:06 AM

How did you manage to go it alone?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 11:13 AM

Unitec will sell you whatever you need but its not cheap. We have a drive back to them now they will only rebuild the old drive and that is like 11K$$$$$.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 01:38 PM

Maybe it has changed, but 5-6 years ago the belts were like $40-45 a foot and only available through Unitec. Being that every Gen2 Iv'e seen have been 2-1 and has minimum of 4 belts you can only imagine the cost of a belt change.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/13/15 10:01 PM

ABE,
It's my understanding, Otis has a patent for this item. And I was told by my friend that Schindler men are not allowed to reffer to them as belts!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 12:26 AM

jkh,
I heard the same thing, Schindler calls them "suspension traction media" lol.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 01:11 AM

And without a technical support base or an Otis friend attached to your umbilical cord port, your in the weeds when it come to the "why won't it run" with the Gen2, and I'm sure it's the same with a variety of other equipment. Man I gotta retire!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 01:23 AM

I thinking the same thing. Tech support would be hard. Customers are fed up with these heavy handed Major companies....There is no more integrity to the business. I have to also say the customer has some fault too!!! It costs money to service your units. If you pay peanuts you get peanut service! I see that in Europe there is a Tech Support Company that will support Independent Elevator Contractors? I would think these services should be available in the near future for us in the USA at some point?

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 02:21 AM

Please stop talking like that! It's messing with my plan. I was hoping I could retire and come work for one you guys as a parts runner!

Bad thing is I'm only 52!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 01:18 PM

Didn't Otis start this whole mess about trying to prevent other companies from working on their equipment? I can remember when we had only one or two Otis and Dover cars that we maintained in this region, and they were just a couple of hydros.... Greed got the best of everybody.

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/14/15 10:08 PM

ABE,
Thanks for the assist with the phrase "suspension traction media". The abbreviation of "STD" was stuck in my head like a bad song. I knew that defiantly meant something else!

STM STM STM,

God, I hope I don't call them STDs...

Abe,
I left you a photo in the gallery!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/15/15 03:28 PM

I really don't know who started it. I remember at Westinghouse we never lost a service contract. Otis took care of Otis and Westinghouse took care of Westinghouse! That was it! One thing did change! The USA doesn't make elevators anymore!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/15/15 09:44 PM

Halfpick,
It's almost impossible to find something that is created from conception to finished product here in the States. The world is a much smaller place then it use to be!

Unfortunately I can not speak eloquently on this subject. I will say it pains me to watch the changes we have observed, the current environment we forge our lives in and what I am imagining the world in which the younger generation, such as my nieces & nephews will have to make thier way!

Sorry I woundered away from the trail a bit!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/16/15 02:11 AM

We are independent and Unitec will sell you what you need. But we stay away from this stuff --- we'd love to have it but it isn't worth going to your customer and saying, "uh we're struggling here."

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/17/15 01:43 AM

I hear you....Good Point.
Posted By: elmcannic

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/17/15 04:15 AM

That's absolutely the worst. "I'm not sure what's wrong Mr. Customer...why it won't do this or that. I'll have to get the Big Guns for this one" or some such dance, only to discover (credit to Mr. B. Gun) two 12 volt batteries behind some secondary panel, buried beneath the EQ box in the controller, are below the operational threshold, and THAT'S why it wouldn't run. DAYUM! We have a number of these type units and we're all challenged (well...except the "Guns") when we have to take calls on these types of equipment...even our own "new" stuff can hammer us. Personally, the MRL is not one of my fave's. Old school here. Oh yeah...I almost forgot, Viva Internacional de Elevadores S.A. de C.V.! Ha!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 03/26/15 03:40 AM

we have some of these in our area. The belts make so much noise. We wipe them down but it doesn't last long. They run fairly well though. Most of the time!!

Re: Otis GEN2 - 04/05/15 12:47 PM

Who has any info on the pulse system? What is minimum wear on the flat belts? how long should they last? How often should they be set on safetys? I know alot of procedures I'm seeing and hearing about on the Gen 2's are very destructive testing. Any info would be helpful.thanks
