Does anyone have any advice on how to repack the jack on an inverter dover jack.

I've done packings on inverted Schindler ' s where we took the jack out of hoistway to change the packing but these older dover jacks are welded to the bolster channel. I know the first step will be to land the car on pipe stands and blow oil back into tank with an air compressor. After that any good pointers would help.

Those packing come as split ring type.

I would second^ getting the slit packings from texicone. The one I did once had a drain plug above the jack head which I opened and drained the jack out as much as possible 1 5 gallon bucket at a time. Also if I remember correctly, the bleeder for the jack is on the opposite end of the jack which you have to access from the car top. I never tried it but like the Schindler inverted jacks, maybe you could remove the bleeder from the car top and rig a up compressor to blow back most of the oil back to the tank.

Manually lower on pipes an when you see it bubble or gurgle in tank close the shut off that will air lock unit if memory service me right. Then remove your packing ,note there will be some residual oil leaking or dripping ,not an oil bath like your thinking.I found the wipe ring the hardest part.

We got it done today. We used an air compressor to blow back the oil, and then drained the remaining oil with the drain plug at the bottom of the jack. We also used a COME-A-LONG to raise plunger, took the pipe off bottom of plunger, used a small piece of pipe to support plunger, and we're able to change wiper, o-ring , and seal without having to use a split packing. I'm sure this will pay off in the years to come. Thanks for the tips.
