Most shackle manufactures spec springs to take some of the shock load and they also help keep proper tension if you have twisting cables. I don't see any disadvantage as long as they are the proper spring.

As noted in a seperate post, I have the Brugg RLE. If the sheaves are not equally grooved, the ropes will not keep equal tension. I have a book put out by Brugg and they would be glad to send it to you about a program they call RLP. (Rope life prediction). I do not work for them but I own the product and rent it along with my services.

The facts about replacing the ropes with out doing anything about the sheaves are amazing. With this knowledge, I doubt people would ever re-rope with out addressing the groove depth or fleet angle.

Groove depth, fleet angle and back to back bends all coupled with hard accelerations and decelerations (the latter thanks to the consultant FTF spec) add to shortened rope life. I inherited two three and a half year old basement machines, Holister Whitney with the simple single deflector over the driver and four more bends in the o.h. which shredded all five ropes on two cars within a month of each other. we're learnin' alot about torsional stresses, back to back bends and the advantages of Langs Lay rope versus Regular Lay rope in certain applications. Expensive year so far.
