not really a technical question, but was wondering if anyone knows how you would go about being a otis role employee? Also does Thyssen, Kone, or Schindler have something similar to otis role? Any idea of what kind of pay they receive? are they union? etc. just curious, as i am getting older, and the body just does not want to cooperate, but the mind still has plenty to offer.

Regional Field Engineers at Otis rotate on role (Remote On line expert). As for KONE, the Tech support group all take calls all the time plus travel to jobsites as needed. Thyssen has an IT department in Texas. If your Union, have to drop your card for Thyssen IT. That's about all I know of Thyssen.

thanks rolly union guy 30 plus years. I only had one otis field engineer come to one of our jobs, and i believe he said he had to drop his card as well. Are Kone tech support guys Union? do they work from an office, i.e. cubicle, from home . do you know?
thinking of retiring, but I'm considering a little part time work to keep me out of trouble, and to buy a few more years until full retirement. I could retire now, but think i still have some good skills to assist the younger guys. A couple days a week or so could at least keep me in the loop. would love to get a remote on line job. hopefully from my decked out basement in hawaii. ha ha

Most of the KONE Tech guys are Union, not all. I worked for KONE Tech Support when I left Otis in 1989. Retired with 48 actual, 58 credited, years. Was a 45 hour adjuster with Otis. One of the last jobs I adjusted for Otis was the 70 story hotel in Detroit, Renaissance Center. Worked in every state in the USA but 2, Alaska, and Vermont, Plus worked in some foreign countries.

I always thought it would be a great idea to start a tec hotline staffed by retired guys. Like a 900 number or subscription based business. Then press 1 for Otis 2 for Westinghouse ect ect. Let the retired guy pick up some extra cash and keep all that knowledge available to everyone. Not sure what the international would think but with the amount of guys retiring and the manpower shortage you would think this could really help out.

If some one figures out how to put that together they would make a lot of money.

I always thought this would be a good company to start to serve the independent companies out there. Or a good service for World, Access or ECI to add.

Role is a combination of rotated RFE's and some full time guys I believe these days some work remotely some out of a centralized location I believe . I could maybe get a name for who manages it all now if you wish . Cant comment on wether you have to drop union status or not . Staff position I guess ?

you would think someone would have came out with a company that offered this already. there must be a legal reason why it has not been accomplished yet, or maybe it is just not a feasible business plan. I know a lot of people visit this forum, and if you could merge technology, i.e. FaceTime, Skype etc. with a knowledgable individual, there should be money to be made, and experience to be passed down. When i was a helper, there was always a mechanic that would help you learn, thats how it was done. thats how i learned, and a little research of your own. Plus the Job was not so pressing, mechanics had time to pass on the knowledge.
It would be nice just to have a little something to do during retirement, to me it would be a hobby, where you earned a couple extra bucks , minus the every day stress of "having to get the car running today" attitude. thats a killer

I have pitched this idea to a couple of suppliers in the business and they thought it was a good idea but were too busy with there own thing and didn't want to try it on. I was asking more as a buyer of that service than someone looking to start that kind of business. But I may look at it differently now that I'm getting closer to retirement.

I work ROLE once every 5 weeks, out in the field the rest of the time. Some of us had to drop our cards and some didn't, depends on what region you are hired in. We have to stay on top of all of the latest and greatest information about big O's products, due to the nature of the information, we HAVE to be employed by Otis smile
