MRL sheave imprinting - 02/28/18 01:01 PM

I'm using the word imprinting for lack of ever hearing this problem named before. But what we are seeing on a couple different manufacturers on drive and car top sheaves is in the groove of the sheave you get a imprint of the cable lays! The imprint is not cut into the grooves as there is no metallic dust coming off sheaves. But rather the imprint is pushed into the steel. After checking the Brinell rating (hardness test) the sheaves check out to meet specs. Also the cable is correct to the manufacturers spec too. But the imprint is causing ride quality and cable tension problems. Have you heard of this problem? And better yet the cause or the cure for this problem? Thanks Dan

Have seen this obviously with damaged cables, but could you use Otis type sheave inserts that you glue in for the old 401's? Other wise are the ropes and sheave materials matched? I have seen these groove marks in them, but from previous ropes.

Both locations are 4 car groups the first is maybe 8 years old and have the OEM ropes on 3 of the 4 cars and one car we re-roped. On this job all car top and CW sheaves are imprinted. The other job is less than a year old and the drive sheaves are imprinted these are also using OEM speced ropes....??????

This is weird. The only think i can think of is the rope too hard for the sheave metal, yet wont give off metal shavings?
