Gen2 Mod - 11/14/23 04:32 PM
Going to mod an Otis Gen 2. What would you mod it with?

The only thing I could think of would be a Schindler 31/3300/5500 or TK EOX/Evolution. They have similar drive systems. At least more competitors can service them as their controllers have built-in service tools, instead of the blue detachable one from Otis.

If you want to go completely generic, Imperial Electric makes a machine to looks just like the KONE EcoDisc (540 series). I this scenario, you would have to relocate the CW and do a complete replacement. At least you would be able to install a fully serviceable controller like MCE. Unless you wanna lost capacity, the imperial machine is the only one that would fit the shaft.

Why would you mod a Gen 2? Does it have a GCS controller on it. Or first gen Otis? TK EOX. Suck. They can’t keep them running on a learn run in Michigan. CAN communicate isn’t the greatest. Schindler are called Shitler for a reason too

MCE says they can control that machine.

I'd trust MCE better than SmartRise.

I second MCE. All day long. I wouldn't mess with smartrise either. They ain't the worst, but they can't touch an MCE ibox for reliability, in my experience.
First, I agree, you don't mod big 4 stuff to other big 4 stuff. The whole point of modding is to not have equipment by any of the big 4. That being said, I've been thrown a big contract of gen 2s a couple of years ago and at this point, other than the POS belt monitors, I like them. The blue tool is quick and easy. Beats the heck out of bringing in a whole laptop bag and setting it up.
You always mod to non proprietary. Around here I see alot of jobs put in by the big 4 or modded by them that the customer specd MCE so they put it in.

It didn't make sense to me when I saw on LinkedIn that Torin and smart rise were going to collaborate and market motor-controller combos, but after reading this thread I understand now:
http://www.vatortrader.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=37013#Post37013Not sure if that would improve or worsen their currently not-so-good tech support.

Why replace the motor? Unless your replacing the belts with ropes and doing everything. If your keeping belts, why not keep the motor and replace all the controls? I'm not sure how you'd replace the belts with ropes anyhow. The bend radius is way too small.

The motors just a normal motor. Is it the belts and or the controller everyone hates so much, or cost of boards/parts? Now that I've been forced to have a bunch on my route, they really ain't that bad, and otis will sell you all parts. The biggest drawback to a mod I see is belt monitoring. You either need to make their pulse unit communicate with a new controller or make your own pulse unit from the ground up. Unless someone's getting crazy and replacing sheaves and everything to go to ropes like an ecospace. But at that point why not just install a whole new elevator?
The gen 2 aren't bad units, way better then the Kone ecos and the Schindler 3300. When you have them on you're route you just need to stock pulse monitors for the ropes and some push buttons

Very true. The 2 most replaced parts on mine are those. And the MRO batteries.
Otis won't sell spare pulse units to us though. They only want to sell one when your sending one back.
That's strange I don't think they've ever had that stipulation with us
