And that is why rope grippers should be mandated ASAP. We have the means to prevent this type of accident but do to cost things like the rope gripper, The Timeout jumper, and other safety devices are not being mandated fast enough. The riding public is ignorant of their existence. The companies and IUEC will benefit from hours worked and added safety that equals less liability. Win Win right? But we race to add unproven new product's on the market that end up with a whole new set of safety problems of their own..?????

Looking at the video...It sort of looks like a Kone Carstation? Hard to tell?

This is exactly what happens to a Kone MX machine when their crappy brakes fail with no cwt safties, rope gripper, and no 214 relay to limit speed to 9fpm by shorting windings. Every Kone MX machine should have a 214 relay.

Doesn't really matter which company installed it. This is the direct result of lack of code and enforcement that one can find in most of the worlds under developed countries.

I would imagine these types of catastrophes are fairly frequent in China and India. Just google a bit and you'll find a lot of bad accidents that were completely avoidable.

Hey Traction! Google NY a few years ago? We had a car do the same thing! Now just to open up the debate a little? What's changed in our industry the last 25 years????? Any true American Companies still around? The equipment in this video less a few relays and code requirements are moving people in this country everyday? Everything is smaller, cheaper and more cost effective....Kind of like the cars we all drive now...made of plastic? And we are not an "under developed country" or are we?

Are you talking about the car that took off with what is believed to be the door locks jumped out? Or was there a car that ran uncontrolled in the up direction?

Obviously older equipment that has not been brought up to date is still at risk for catastrophic failure. In the end it comes down to maintenance frequency, quality and how many safety features are installed on the lift.

Yes, the car that ran uncontrolled in the up direction...That equipment is still being produced for the north american market and abroad. From what little news that is out there, sounds like human error.

From what I've read it was a tke elevator. Brake opened and it lost motor control. No rope brake or ascending overspend protection. I recently talked to another mechanic from our local with kone and he had a similar (but slower) incident happen with him on the cartop. The brake failed open for some reason. Work safe out there guys!

The kone mx machine has a dynamic braking contactor in the drive v3f, kdl etc but if that fails the lift moves a floor per second its shocking how fast it moves and with no up safety gear or rope gripper it feels like a step backwards not forwards... Horay for kone :-(

Is it possible that dynamic brake fails? I mean it is it not build in the motor?

Or is it possible that if the contactor that makes the short circuit fails and the machine turns into pulley ?
