Re: Local 19 Seattle - 09/14/17 02:23 PM

When was this list established? I'm new to most of this but I did email local 19 in April about openings on the east side of the state. I never heard back until last week. The opening for spokane and montana had already been posted on NEIEP website and I applied the day it opened on Aug 14th. But in the reply email I finally received on Sept 6th the lady told me Seattle was full with apprentices until 2019. Does this just mean they aren't re-establishing their list until then or that they actually aren't predicting hiring new apprentices? again, I'm new to this and I'm trying to get on in the spokane area but when I read that, I found it intriguing.

Hey everyone, I interviewed the last Wednesday of March with the union president and he said they are interviewing for three weeks and the results should be available about a week after that. The list does in fact reset when our list becomes available. Best of luck to you all! Hope to see some of you out there.

Also, anyone interviewing in Portland?

Yeah does seem like that too. Post on here brotha when u get called so we all have an idea where the list is! I wanna say give it a month bro, jump said 2 people are coming from out of town so the list won't probably move until they start

Two new apprentices, ones from Texas, other one is from Chicago, he said two weeks til they start, so list is at a stall for now

Yeah true, I think it will be another month for u to get called though, he told me in September the list is going to slow down because there's not enough mechanics so that was kind of a bummer..

So I called and ended up pressing 1 for general inquiries. The lady said they will be posting updates in the iuec local 19 website on the home page as they come from now on. Currently it says 20 people and she said they've hired 23 so weekly they will be posting updates if there are any.

https://www.iuec19.org

Also she said if your number is a within a couple of getting called they will give you a warning call to let you know you're coming up soon.

Just throwing this out here like how I did the Reddit thread last week, list is out of 310 to give everyone here and idea how big the list is, 50 people failed the interview, so we're all pretty lucky to at least make the list..

Anyone know where the apprentice school is located? And if I live several hours away, is there online schooling?

Hey everyone, sorry I've been unresponsive. My phone Crap out on me and it's all I have for communication right now. I've been in the warehouse the last couple of weeks. Will be starting in the field next Monday. There's a lot of work out there. I don't think it's necessary to call everyday, that's just annoying to the hall but once a week if all you should need. You'll get a notice when your time is up. Met a lot of great people so far so just keep that phone close and if you miss a call, call back asap!

From what I've been hearing, not enough mechanics to keep up with the work load. Quite a few temporary mechanics. So y'all are waiting on someone to work with. Met guys in Seattle from Portland, Spokane, and Alaska. All mechanics coming here to work, so the work is there guys and gals

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 07/26/19 02:41 PM

I applied for Spokane 2 years ago.. they said up to 20 openings and 3 months after the process they had three apprentices laid off. I quit checking on the list after getting hired through the UA, but last I checked it never even moved. I work on job sites around eastern Washington with elevator guys and some of them have told me it has taken them 4 to 5 years to finish the apprenticeship because things slow down often and they work for a while then get laid off for a while. Maybe somebody has more insight then me for Spokane? Just letting you know what my experience has been
Posted By: Soggywater

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 07/27/19 12:02 AM

Dmart144 isn’t the apprenticeship supposed to be five years anyway?
Posted By: Silly

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 07/27/19 04:46 AM

Apprenticeship will take 4-5 years, flat out no way around that. First 6 months you don't take class, so do the math.

Seattle is booming, we have more TMs working now than I have seen in 15 years, but we have peaked with qualified mechanic material. They still are taking transients last I heard, but there aren't a whole lot of people willing to move. Until this next group tests out, and the second years become TM eligible, the list will slow.

On a good note, the last bunch of probies we took at TKE seem to have been pretty good. I even kept my first day hire, and that's fairly unusual for me.

So me being in the #40's should I be looking at next year to get hired?

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 07/29/19 04:29 AM

The only way to speed up the apprenticeship is to challenge the courses. It’s really hard and even to do that you need to have certain qualifications.

Maybe you misunderstood the guy. You have 18 months to work 12 months of 100 hours or more. If you don’t get those hours in the first 18 months you start over.

5 year apprenticeship hombres.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 08/23/19 07:18 AM

Yeah, apprenticeship is around 5 years and that’s assuming you pass all of your classes and work over 8,000 hours. You’re not eligible to start your 4 years of classroom training until you finish the 6 month online program first. And once you’re done with school you have to wait for your invite to take the mechanics exam which takes another 2-3 months if you have all your ojt hours in order.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 01/08/20 12:20 AM

I don't know what you're trying to pay for rent man but the hall is in Seattle and it's expensive as Screw and packed. I live in Kirkland and hate it. I have dogs and I'm moving out to Monroe when my lease is up. Only about an hour out and way cheaper. I'm paying 2k for a two bed apt. I live with my girlfriend though. The everett/ Mill Creek area is nice and traffic isn't too bad. The further south you go towards Tacoma the worse traffic is. Top 5 worst cities in America for traffic.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 01/12/20 02:41 AM

I am south of Puyallup, out in Graham. 1:15 to Seattle in the mornings, and about 1:30 home in the afternoon. I don't mind it because I love the area, I have property for my dogs and my family doesn't have to deal with all the rat race, just me. Find some place you really enjoy, then just suck it up.

I've looked at that area and wouldn't mind it. Also I've heard a lot about Puyallup area and the guys love it. Kind of kicking myself for signing a place in Kirkland. My lady got a full time teaching job offer there and didn't want to commute🤷. I'm looking for property for me and my dogs. A shop or garage is needed. I'm going stir crazy not being able to do my own projects. Any TKE guys going to quarterly safety meeting on Tuesday?

Posted By: nvno1

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 03/05/20 05:24 PM

I'm a good ways out in the 140's. I'm just hoping the list moves a little quicker so that they make it that far. In the back of my mind I fully expect the list to stop in the 120's and I'll have to start over this coming January. It's okay, I'm still really excited about the career opportunity and next time I'll know exactly what to expect whereas this time I was like a deer in the headlights. I actually did really good on the test, but I get so nervous for interviews (especially ones that could change my life!).

Just called this morning and the list is at #77. Jim said that the construction companies in town are getting some larger projects to a point where they will need more elevator guys soon. He think it should start moving in about a month and could move fairly quickly.

We have a lot of Guys who are still furloughed due to Covid-19. Also congrats on getting this far. Re: Local 19 Seattle - 11/21/21 08:21 PM

Just reviving an old thread....Is anybody on the new list for Local 19 Seattle? It sounds like they made it to the low 90's for the last list which went three years instead of two because of Covid. Does anybody know how many interviewed or how many are on the current list? What is your background and list ranking? I'm a sparky working in Seattle and made the list at 63. I think a welding cert. would have helped so I'll probably start working on that soon. Good luck to everybody!

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 11/22/21 11:35 PM

We hired a guy from the last list, he was 106. My brother got in this current list at number 9. He's already been working for 2 and a half weeks.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 11/24/21 01:05 AM

Wow, well that sounds promising! The website says they are still on #1 but it has been a month since the interviews and they aren't exactly known for being fast to update the website! Hahaha. Congrats to you and your brother! How are things working out for you? I think you were on the last draw if I'm not mistaken.

Just started my 3rd year. It's been the best decision I've ever made.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/01/21 05:22 AM

I'm happy for you man! If you don't mind me asking, I had a couple questions about the apprenticeship program. You've done two years now, How's it setup? Is it 5 days a week after work for an hour? Is it two days a week? Is every year different or does it stay the same day every week for the full five years? How many are in the classroom with you? Are the classes super hard with tons of homework or more like the do-your-work-in-class type classes? Are there "lab" assignments or hands-on trainings? Thanks again for your insight. I've done an apprenticeship and I'm just curious what life will look like once I get the call.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/10/21 05:55 AM

Disclaimer, I was out of school before covid so some things have probably changed. I believe lessons run for 13 weeks plus a final for each class. 2 classes per year. You go to class once a week for 4 hours in the evening. Unlike electricians, we don’t lose working hours for school. Some classes are tougher than others. 400,600, and 700 are probably the most difficult. They avoid starting you in these classes. It’s nice if you can go
through in order but it often doesn’t work that way.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/15/21 10:34 PM

Thanks for your insight. It's good to know which classes are considered more difficult so I can prepare myself. Classes once per week is so much more doable than two or three days per week (electricians). It's tough having night school more than once per week when you have young kids. I feel really bad leaving my wife by herself with the little terrorists, because I've done it when she is out-of-town for work, and it'll make you crazy sometimes. lol

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/16/21 12:15 AM

I completed the IBEW Inside Wiremans apprenticeship program prior to completing the IUEC NEIEP apprenticeship program. The IBEW program was two nights a week and one eight hour Saturday per month. If you scored less then a 70% on any of your final tests you were out. If you missed more than two classes you were out. The IUEC program was more laxxed, one night a week. If you failed a course you could retake it. If you missed days you could make them up. The IBEW program administrator would make employer changes quite often to give us different work experience. If you're not careful in the IUEC you could end up cleaning and stacking rails with the same company for 5 years. I was quite fortunate to get a little bit of experience in all aspects of both of the trades. The elevator trade is so much more complex and dangerous. You are forever learning new things. You can't beat the IUEC pay/benefits. Only trade off is most elevators/escalator work is in the big cities (commute, cost of living, ect.). Electrical work is everywere. Both trades will provide a great living. I love being an elevator man!

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/19/21 06:10 AM

I agree that the IBEW has a very inflexible program. I understand why they are like that but sometimes bending the rules a little will keep a few more good apprentices on the books. The schedule for the IUEC classes sounds much better for family life. What makes the Elevator trade more complex in your opinion? Thanks for the info! Everything I hear makes me more excited. Hopefully, in a few months my number will come up.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/25/21 11:59 PM

The instructors are top notch because they actually care ! Also if you have any issues don't be afraid to reach out to Patrick Straeffer, your instructor, or Scott McGinty. This Union is strong ! These guys understand we have to preserve our work and passing down good habits, methods and overall knowledge shid. Those are just a few...........

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 12/28/21 02:48 PM

Man, I'm going to be so happy and excited to learn if the instruction is half as good as everyone says it is. Scott seems like a really nice guy. I have not had the opportunity to meet Patrick yet but I look forward to it. I like the trade because the work is very specific. You would not be able to replace these guys with other tradesmen or automate the work very easily. That makes the career much safer (job security) than many other careers where the knowledge is widely available and easy to learn on youtube. You got in on the last round didn't you, Mr. Penthouse? What's your experience been like from the start?

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 03/25/22 09:43 PM

Just called this afternoon. It looks like the list is moving again. She said that they just hired 2 more so the list is at #22 now.

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 05/20/22 06:50 PM

Just got a call from the the Seattle hall letting me know that their list is now on #52. He said that he expects to hire 20-30 within the next couple months because the cement workers are back and jobs are starting to get to a point where they'll need more elevator crews. Things are getting exciting!! Looking forward to working with some of you guys soon.

I’m number 74. I know I’ll get called soon and was wondering if anyone knows that scale so I can start looking for apartments out there and figure out what I can afford. Live in Vegas currently. Thanks in advance.

I was #14. Started with Otis back in December. Where are all you guys getting hired at?
Posted By: nvno1

Re: Local 19 Seattle - 07/07/22 03:27 AM

Hey noylrelyt! I was number #63 and just got the call today. I will be starting Monday with Otis. It sounds like they took me and one other guy off the list. I'll probably get to meet you at some point. Do you live near the shop? It seems like there is no slow down for Seattle at the moment. The only constraint is how quick cement can get delivered.

Be prepared to leave in 3-5 days because Jim said he is taking 5-6 every couple weeks. You are about 10 guys down the list so (this is just a guess) you might get called in less than a month. Get ready!
