Local #1 New York City - 09/14/17 12:48 PM

Hello everyone. Local #1 in NYC is starting to take applications after about 4 years. I'm curious if anyone is interested or if anyone is thinking about applying.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 10/29/17 03:00 AM

I applied today. This will probably be my final shot at trying to get in though. Also, they took applications 2 years ago, not 4. I think the list had about 700 people on it. Did you apply?

Re: Local #1 New York City - 10/30/17 08:58 PM

For Local 1, how does it work if you live in NJ? I know there is a NJ office, so is there a separate list for NJ or is just one list that is for NYC and NJ and you just work wherever they send you?

Re: Local #1 New York City - 10/31/17 03:37 PM

How come you didn't get in? Failed the test? Or interview? 2 years really? This year they took only 1250 applications and closed really quick. This is my first time applying Nick. I have no knowledge besides the local office being in queens. I think it's one list and you just work for the company that hires you.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/07/17 06:34 AM

Hi Huys,

does any one know what kid of math and algebra is on the EIAT, I purchased the practice from Job Prep and there is a lot of formulas like probability, OHM’s Law Theory.

That seems like over kill for a basic entrance exam..

Any help would be appreciated, THANKS and good luck to all!

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/07/17 10:25 PM

I see mixed reviews in my research. Some say its basic math and algebra and I've also read it includes electrical calculations. I say just study it all- better safe than sorry.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/13/17 04:59 PM

I'm not sure. I would say basic algebra. It says basic skills so I don't think advanced formulas would be asked. And Dr Gut your test was set for a Sunday? I didn't think they would do exams on the weekend.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/13/17 05:27 PM

Yea, I'm surprised it was set for a Sunday too. It works for me though. I don't have to take a day off from work or anything.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/18/17 06:49 PM

Yea, mine was at 10am yesterday. It was pretty easy. I feel really good about getting better than a 70. The tool assessment was a joke. That was an easy 20 points on the interview.
Posted By: NycHopeful718

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/19/17 04:04 AM

Pretty easy, took the exam on Friday and they said we should have our results in 1-2 weeks.

I might have messed up one on the tool exam.

Besides that interviews are the week of jan 22 - jan 29 based on alphabetical ordwr

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/19/17 06:05 PM

I took mine yesterday. It was ok.

Not hard but not easy. The mechanical part was a bit confusing to me.

I'm hope I did well enough for a 70. Sounds like we'll get emails on whether we passed or fail by January

Re: Local #1 New York City - 12/29/17 07:11 PM

I passed the exam fellas, hope you guys did as well. Email mentioned that I would get another email for the time and date for my interview no later than Jan 5.

I passed, my interview is on the 25th as well.

Any one have any tips, or ideas on what to brush up on for the interview besides the basic S.(situation)T(task).A(action).R(result) questions

Fingers crossed.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/29/18 06:46 AM

Looks like the interviews were scheduled by Last name, hopefully we get the list numbers during the week of Feb 5th like the Interviewer said.

Supposedly 1000 people being interviewed for 100 (maybe 200) apprenticeship spots. That’s super competitive.
Posted By: DrGut

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/29/18 02:10 PM

Something else I noticed- the 2015 apprenticeship announcement said they expect to hire 50 apprentices and on the local 1 website, they are up to list #189 as of today. This should give an idea of how many numbers they go through on the list for every expected hire.
Posted By: 930cc

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/30/18 02:45 PM

I passed the test and I interview on the 24th as well. Seems like they hired 189 guys of the last list so if it goes the same this year even if you don’t rank high you still might get called.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/30/18 07:59 PM

How do you feel about your interviews? I wasn’t really prepared for those questions but I think I did ok. Was very nervous, and felt like I cornered in by 2 detectives rather then being on a interview. Such a small room actually was glad to get out of there in 20 mins
Posted By: NycHopeful718

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/31/18 02:20 AM

I felt the same way Brother. Even though I correctly guessed what 4 outta the 7 questions were I still felt nervous, especially since i was in the tiny room, and they take notes right infront of you. They kicked me out in 20 mins as well. Hope I did well.
Posted By: DrGut

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/31/18 02:37 PM

I'm sure everyone felt that way to some extent. Hopefully we find out our list number within the next 2 weeks and that will let us know how we really did.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/31/18 04:56 PM

Does anyone know how many people passed the test ? I highly doubt they are interviewing 1000 people
Posted By: DrGut

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/31/18 06:15 PM

I was also told they are interviewing 1,000 people. When I took the aptitude test, they said they left the application open longer than the original 1,250 applications that they planned and they ended up accepting around 2,700. Based on that I don't tihnk 1,000 people passing sounds unreasonable.
Posted By: 930cc

Re: Local #1 New York City - 01/31/18 07:44 PM

There was 7 rooms I believe ? So they interview for a week

Figure 3 guys per hour , 7 hours days that’s 21 ppl per day

Times that by number of rooms = 147x5 days

So 735 interviews. You might be right with 1000 number , in which case it will be super competitive.

Haven’t received anything yet. I did notice they updated the local one website though. Feb 5th was the cut off for the old list and they took that off.

Is it 4pm yet? Best of luck to all. Hoping for a number inside 200, my friend whos a journeyman said they hired a little more than 200 from the last one as of Monday(rumor is they will do the same)and the union is gonna start using this list in March.

I’m ranked 543

Out of how many people I wonder
Posted By: pspark3

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 09:49 PM

Mid 700’s for me. As an IBEW apprentice I’m quite surprised. Didn’t think my interview went that bad.
Posted By: BigJ

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 09:55 PM

I thought my interview went pretty well and have 12 years of electricial experience. The problem is they left it open for to long and took 2700 people to test instead of 1250. Much more competition
Posted By: pspark3

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 09:58 PM

A friend of mine scored in the mid 500’s with no construction experience at all. Apparently work history has little value.
Posted By: Nvirb

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 10:04 PM

I ranked 1006 LOL! Have to say, even though I have no construction experience... I was pretty surprised with my ranking. Interview had gone pretty well.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 10:17 PM

Damn how many people made the list. Did anyone on here get a 200 or better
Posted By: NycHopeful718

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 11:29 PM

Already in a union, I got ranked in the 500s lol
Posted By: pspark3

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 11:36 PM

I agree with BigJ. They let the application period go on for too long.
Posted By: 930cc

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/16/18 11:39 PM

Yeah I’m in my current union for 10 years as well so I told my cuzin about my rank he’s a elevator mechanic and he says to me it’s all who you know.
Posted By: DrGut

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/17/18 01:01 AM

I ranked 197.. I guess I should be happy with that.
Posted By: Albomuch

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/17/18 03:43 AM

Ranked 120, not as bad as I thought.
Posted By: 930cc

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/17/18 12:17 PM

That’s a nice number Albomuch. Drgut you should be good also. What exactly is the point of ranking up to 1000 if they aren’t going to hire hat many people in 2 years? I also heard that these lists are sometimes good for 4 years from people in industry. Don’t know how true that is.

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/17/18 12:30 PM

There got to be a reason there is so many more people this time around
Posted By: rveloce7

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/17/18 01:24 PM

I’m 1003 and I was surprised too. I didn’t expect a great number because I don’t have much experience but the interview went really well. I’m starting a pre-apprentice gig with local 740 in a few weeks so it didn’t sting as bad as it would’ve.

hope you right, or maybe the glitch added zeros and one's to all the rankings by mistake lol

Re: Local #1 New York City - 02/21/18 12:41 PM

Hopefully the reason there is so many people is because they are planning on calling a lot of apprentices.

Check out this prevailing wage schedule. Union wages are usually pretty close if not identical to prevailing wages.

https://localoneiuec.com/apprenticeship.aspx

Says recruitment number is at 183, I plan on applying in 2020. Do wage rates differ in Locals? Or all the same?
Posted By: JHessorz

Re: Local #1 New York City - 07/07/19 03:08 PM

Wage rates differ between Locals. Local 1 negotiates their own contracts so things work a little differently with them but I have seen the Local 3 and Local 5 booklets with different wage rates before I came to Local 1. Also there is different wage rates for the type of work you are doing, construction obviously paying the highest followed by Mod and Maintenance being lower.
