Anybody interviewing this week?

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 08/29/18 05:49 AM

I did my interview on the 27th at 2 pm. Now its all up to lady luck. If it happens, it happens, and if not, well at least I gave it my best effort. I can say this it was a definitely a learning experience. This is my first post here, so I don't really know what to say, other than hello, and whats up? Oh yeah and if anyone knows what is next? Other than being patient, of course, for 3 to 4 weeks until we get our results.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 08/29/18 07:52 PM

This is my second interview so I understand man, by by any chance do you know how many days there going to interview?

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 08/31/18 06:07 AM

There is another interview ? What? The way I understood it was this was the only interview for the apprenticeship. I mean when a company calls the union for new recruits, the union sends people out to work for them, and then you have to apply at that company. That's mostly just for taxes and stuff, there's also a drug test.I thought that as for this kind of interview, that's it. There is, however, always a surprise somewhere, I guess, right? As for how many days they have to go, till the end, that's going to be any ones guess. Since my last name starts with a C, and they are going alphabetically, my guess is, that they are not anywhere close to done yet. I would say three weeks maybe more. I didn't ask about that while I was there, sorry. Hope that helps.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 08/31/18 06:41 PM

I meant like my second interview ever, first one was in Reno a different recruitment, now this one in vegas, they do go by alphabetical order,y last be starts with E, and they did the E-G at the morning interviews. I'm pretty sure today is the last day of interviews, they'll send you and email to to let u know if you even passed the interview and if you did you'll get a number rank to let u know where u are on the list. You shouldve asked them these questions, I asked them that's how I know these things lol..
Posted By: julius

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/03/18 11:30 AM

I should have asked what questions? The only question I had was about you saying there was a second interview, but now I get it. You were saying this was your second interview meaning you went thru this once before. As far as questions I needed to ask them I asked everything I could think of while I was there so I am pretty content with everything so far. And as far as where they are in the process I don't think that they are anywhere near the end of the interviews from what they were saying it seemed as if there was about two weeks of interviews left to complete. and I don't know if they were factoring in the holiday but it's all good because however long they take is of no consequence to me because I have nothing but time so a waiting game I can play lol. So what questions did they ask in your interview?

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/09/18 11:47 PM

I don't remember most, easy questions though I think like 7 only, did you get your rank yet?
Posted By: Rique925

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/10/18 07:36 PM

Called the hall and the receptionist was pretty cool, she gave me my rank already I'm #109/345 with 91.5 score, however she said that they usually only hire at most in vegas up to 100 so I have to get lucky if people turn down the job, don't pass drug test, don't like the work, etc..damn I was hoping to at least be under 100.
Posted By: julius

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/11/18 12:05 AM

just got my rank 329 but without any reference point that number means nothing to me or anyone else. and I don't know if I should be happy or not? Now what oh boy om 329th in line. Do I just continue to sit here until i get a surprise call completely unexpectedly and jump as soon as it comes to see if I get some job with whoever or whatever company? I could have done everything I have done so far on my own and just went into any business like otis or thyssen and just applied. That would have been more informative and easier than all this unnecessary testing and interviewing and after all of those hoops that i jumped thru I am still sitting here and I don't know anything still. Oops I lied I know that this whole process is not necessary. If this is what the dues that I am going to have to pay are going to be used for then I might just need to rethink this whole process. or someone needs to tell me more and helps me to come around because right now my confidence level in the people running this whole operation is not very high.

Actually, the company foots the bill for NEIEP. Well, with your ranking, the confidence of the people interviewing you wasn't high either.

I'd defer to the expertise of the secretary. I know where I am we burn through the lists.

I talked to the apprenticeship coordinator, and he said I have a couple chance but to be patient, so til then that's what I'm going to do..I'm thinking a year.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/14/18 03:48 AM

Hi guys thanks for starting this thread, I ranked 175 the competition for an apprenticeship was extremely competitive for Vegas this round apparently 6 people got 100% perfect scores and from wat I’m told hasn’t happened in the past and many highly qualified people went out for the gig. From what I’m told Otis will be hiring enough to put together 50 crews so if that’s 3 apprentices to one mechanic that’s 150 right there and that’s only one company 3 per one mechanic might be stretching it but good for a solid 100. So I’m not sure why the secretary said 100 tops, from what I have learned that’s just not true. Yes raiders stadium is a big job and the mall around it will be massive as well as 2 projects that stalled for some time are starting back up. I’m not worried being 175 I was told that it’s a respectable spot given my lack of direct qualifications so basically I was reassured I must of interviewed enough for my name to memorable by the quardinator so that’s cool but didn’t move me ahead of any one with a mechanical engineering or electrical degree. I have gathered my info from someone who teaches with the quardinator on a daily basis and 3 other mechanics I’m personal friends with so I feel this is trustable but take it with a grain of salt. The way I see it everyone will get a shot in time once these big jobs start. There is also those who can’t hang with the demand of the job or stay up with the school work so that can’t hurt either. It would be nice tho for us to notify the board what placing you are when you get called out so we could possibly judge when it could be the rest of our turns as well. As I get more info from my “intel” I will fill every one in

23 man, very informative info
Posted By: GenErick

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/14/18 04:44 AM

That’s great info that bodes well for us if correct (crossing my fingers) there appears to be a few of us here now, I’m ranked within the first one hundred. I would be willing to call every few weeks to ask about what number they are on or to get any possible info if others on this board are willing to do the same. Would anyone that has a contact name and number for someone at the apprenticeship office be willing to PM that information to the rest of us? I think it would benefit us all.

I’m 18. Ranked number 311 on the list. My cousins a regional manager for thyssen. He said not to worry at all with all the work coming I should have no problem. I’m hopeful. Called union hall receptionist said they weren’t allowed to give out scores for test which confused the hell outta me haha. Good luck to everyone!

When you're 18, you got all the time in the world and dont mind waiting. When you're in your mid 30s, let's get it moving!! Lol. I heard this whole list will get exhausted.... could take 12-18 months.

From the NEBA Agreement:

"Article X
Par. 2. The total number of Helpers, Apprentices and Assistant Mechanics employed shall not exceed the number of Mechanics on any one job, except on jobs where two teams or more are working, one extra Helper, Apprentice or Assistant Mechanic may be employed for the first two teams and an extra Helper,Apprentice or Assistant Mechanic for each additional three teams.Further, the Company may use as many Helpers, Apprentices and Assistant Mechanics as best suits his convenience under the direction of a Mechanic in wrecking old plants and in handling and hoisting material, and on foundation work. When removing old and installing new cables on existing elevator installations, the Company may use two Helpers, Apprentices or Assistant Mechanics to one Mechanic."

Rule of thumb: One Mechanic One Helper.

So if there are 50 teams this rule doesn’t apply?
I’m only going off what a mechanic that’s also a teacher told me not trying to spread miss information

I got ranked 68. Just hoping I eventually get a call, just thankful I got on the bench. The first time I tried in LA I wasn’t able to get on, tried another time in Phoenix and was ranked 62 but never got called.

Man excellent rank. What do you do for work? What degree or certs do you have? I'm trying to get a rank like that next time.
Posted By: Beans94

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/14/18 08:09 PM

One year of construction experience with a general contractor doing carpentry, two years of college with a good gpa, and a forklift certification. When I did my first interview the only thing I had was a forklift cert. i think that if you are really dedicated to being in the elevator industry you’ll do what it takes to really make yourself valuable to them. I was also discouraged at times especially when I didn’t make it but along the way you just keep trying to improve yourself for the process. Join other trades such as steamfitters (welding experience) or become an electrician; two very valuable skill sets in this industry.

I think mechanics and union reps want a guy that can read a tape and work with other tools, but also a person that can follow directions and won’t talk back when yelled at or told to do something. So construction experience in my opinion shows both of those qualities since you usually work with someone that teaches you things.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/14/18 08:10 PM

Ithink it's just how well you grade. Dont think experience has any on role. Maybe osha 10 cert, which I have. I know someone who got a 93 and they were in the 80s. Not many points separate 91.5/109 to a rank in the 60's... I'll assume he got a 94 or 94.5. That tool assessment was also part of the interview grade... an excellent group of people took this test in Vegas.... nothing we could've done about that.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/14/18 08:25 PM

I have zero construction experience... maybe that's what brought me down.
Posted By: Csalazar311

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/15/18 12:49 AM

If you don’t have construction/mechanical expierence at all you won’t make too 100 that’s what they told me.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/15/18 01:02 AM

Shoot I got an electrical "tech math" cert, 1 year of electrical experience, welding school I just started, a rigging cert,OSHA 30, forklift cert, twic cert, Rso cert. Tool assessment was easy, I guess I messed up the easiest part, the oral interview..
Posted By: Dro

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/15/18 02:59 AM

If you have all those certs and still got a 109, Iwill go out on a limb and say that the interview was worth the most, as you scored 3 points higher than me and all Ihave is an OSHA 10.... I have inside info saying that relateable work experience is not factored to very minimal.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 09/19/18 03:07 AM

Travis, general rule of thumb is one apprentice to one mechanic. Yes, on bigger jobs they will sometimes have a floating helper or two, AKA 8 two man crews may have an additional 2-3 apprentices on the job site. Just because there are 18 elevators in a building dont assume that's 18 crews. Up in my neck of the woods we would do it with around 5 crews, depending on tme and space constraints.

The good news for all you Vegas guys is the legalized marijuana. We have had so many in the top 20% fail drug tests up here. Without knowing the true work load, or quality of applicants, I would think if you score in the top 35-40% of that list, you have a decent chance at being called within the next 12 months.

For those outside that number, of course there is Crap to do. Go get some sort of education that relates. Welding, go learn hydraulic theory, be proficient with hand tools, including metric, hoisting and rigging, learn how to tie a knot. Education is the biggest, no one can ever take that from you. Go test in another area. This isn't a job, it is a career....get in, do well, and you and your family are set for life.

As an update let me tell you all that I just got off the phone with Joe Boswell..he explained to me that they are at most going to hire 50 guys, maybe up to 75, so beans you are in luck, however for the most of us he made it pretty clear to retry again in 2 years. Travis and dro idk what you heard, but at the same time what I don't understand is why would the list be so big (345) if they were only going to hire 50-75 at most??he didn't have a response to it so still kinda confused on this matter..oh yeah I forgot, he said I'd the last list they only hired 30 new hires.

I wasnt insinuating that #1 turned it down, but I suppose it did read like that. Like I've said earlier in posts, this list will be exhausted and if turns out to be a 50% show up rate, itll move quicker than most think... especially given failed drug tests....

For anyone hoping to get in this year, I heard its gonna be difficult. The fiscal year for the companies end mid December, so obviously they limit spending as the fiscal end nears. But once the new fiscal year starts, they will hire the next 100 guys off the list. They may call 2 or 3 before the year ends, but 100 in January. Sit tight... like I said earlier, they've called only 2 and #1 did turn it down.

Haha were gunna be hanging iron for a while. Heads up This job is crazy the safety team is running people off the job every day for minor violations and they don’t give any warnings at all they even have fancy little tethers for our tape measures 😂

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 11/02/18 10:10 PM

I've been on job sites with over the top safety before too. I'd rather be under watch from the safety patrol that would't let me do my job then be on my current site where anything goes. Two weeks ago I saw a guy get hauled away on a stretcher after he had a piece of insulation land on his head and break his kneck. Stay safe.

I know you guys are super excited about getting the call but I wouldn’t bug the office everyday. Maybe once a week or something. They’re super busy and got a lot of paperwork to do all the time and are quite under staffed. Just be patient, they’ll call you when it’s your time. Like I said, when I was waiting I would call every 1-2 weeks. Good luck

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 02/23/19 06:40 AM

If you call and hit the number for the receptionist it goes to her voicemail. I'm speculating that the receptionist is on vacation or out of office. It is possible they went to screening calls and you have to leave a voicemail to get a reply. Would be really cool if they could just post what number the list is on, even if it was once a month. Or even better if their phone system had a number you could press that would just tell you the current list number so people could call like crazy and it wouldn't bother them. Probably too much money or they don't really want the info that out there.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 03/09/19 02:01 PM

Phoenix has a lot of work right now. Almost at my 6 month period where I get my benefits so far and enjoying working out here. All I have to say is stay patient, I got called almost 2 years after I applied but it was worth the wait. Once you get in to the trade stay quiet, most mechanics don’t like helpers with personal opinions so leave them at home and don’t talk about past work experience. Most mechanics like when a helper doesn’t know much, it gives them the oppurtunity to teach them things the right way, not having to correct bad habits.

I'm just going to put this out there. It is hard to start in Vegas with nothing. No one wants to rent to you without having paystubs in state that you dont have yet. Im stuck paying 6 months up front and still might not get the crappy apartment because I dont have rent history in the last year because I own my place. If anyone gets the call and needs some help getting started in Vegas send me a pm and I can try to help you the best I can. On another note the people at the hall and company I work for are great so far.

Im not sure if you are talking about Vegas or Los Angeles. For either I'm not really qualified to answer. When I was in Los Angeles as a different trade a few months ago I was always busy. In Vegas doing elevator I have been staying busy as well. The only down time I've had has been because my mechanic had time off. I think I'm paired up with a mechanic with a good reputation that is well liked in the company so I think they keep him busy.

Las Vegas-

Good morning and good day to all. I'm new here and looking for some solid info on the "list". After testing and interview, I landed at #31 on September 11, 2018. Been a little difficult to get information on where the list is at currently. I'm inquiring about a few figures. First, what number is the apprenticeship list on. Second, how many Travelers are currently in Las Vegas and lastly, does anyone know how many are sitting on the bench right now?

From what I understand, these three figures pertain to when I'll start working. I'm so excited I just can't stand it!

I appreciate any and all input and assistance. Best of luck to all! Thank you.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 07/11/19 05:03 PM

I saw on previous post that some were having tribulations locating good lodging. I was born and raised in Las Vegas so I'm quite versed in the subject. If anyone needs any help, I know Realtors and of course, the very good areas to live in. All of them. Getting Apartments is not really what I would do. I would locate a realtor and have them find you a condo. That way you're dealing with a direct owner rather than some management company. If anyone needs any help, hit me up.

Re: Local 18 - Las Vegas - 07/11/19 05:05 PM

By the way, I'll keep everyone posted on any information that I hear. I'm # 31 and I know they've got to be getting close to that at this point. I'm about to jump out of my skin with the anticipation of my apprenticeship! The waiting and wondering is not an easy endeavor. Lol!

The list barely passed a year and you guys think the list is a bust already? They are on pace to meet the 50-100 number that was announced during my EIAT group.

I think they hype I heard from my family and friends in the trade made it sound like they were gonna fly through the list, but correct me if I’m wrong they are only in the 30’s after a year?
