Coronavirus Out of work?

Coronavirus Out of work? - 03/18/20 03:08 PM

Any locals/ companies/ divisions out of work due to the coronavirus? I just heard this morning that TKE in Phoenix laid off all mod and NI guys, any word on if that is true?
I'm up in Local 19 Seattle and we're still going strong. Just the normal email from the company saying stay home if you're sick. Apparently LNI is walking the larger job sites checking on conditions and head counts.

Schindler Houston office closed for a day or 2. They where taking precautions and sanitizing the office itself. I'm in service. Internal email stated NY office is closed. Our hotels are ghost towns and hospitals are screening at entry points. Most of buildings emptying on daily basis. I have had a unit out for weeks now and building not complaining. People starting to run on the banks and ATMs. We're still holding a job for now. Unsure what is next like every1 else. Stay strong brothers and sisters we all knew something like this was going to happen at some point. God Bless

Local 19 here, they have shut down the light rail project south of Seattle near "high viz" areas. I'm in Bellevue with no talk of shutting down.

Our Schindler branches in Indiana and Ohio have told all office employees to work from home for the next couple of weeks, but all of us in the field are still running strong so far...

Local19, NI here. Guys we are gonna get through this. Personally, I think it's going to be a six week window. We closed Washington state over 2800 cases or so, in two weeks time we will be triple or more of that number, so expect the time down to be extended.

I try and take the time to train my apprentices for occasions like this. Learn to live within your means, budget off your hourly only, save all perdiem, zone pay, overtime for "oh Crap" funds. The last 20 years we have a ton of scares, from 9/11, (locally the Nisqually quake), bird flu, swine flu, Zika virus, Ebola, you name it. Any one of these things had the ability to be catastrophic to a local or national economy.
We make damn good money, save some so you have the ability to coast these sorts of issues out.

For me personally, I was scheduled for vacation time anyways, I am taking it so some other union brother is able to work just that little bit more. Be safe out there ladies and gentlemen, and I will see you all on the other side of this.

Good information there Silly. I am sure your apprentices appreciate those tips. I think it's at least going through the end of April up here in Seattle. I am curious to see if classes go longer into the summer when we return. Our teacher is still having us do homework weekly.

We will see in the next couple days if and how long the extension will be here in wa. I can tell you TK yesterday officially furloughed mechanics and apprentices. its gonna be a while before they start calling people from the list man. They have to go through all the furlough lists before the companies can hire from the bench. TMs have been getting turned back into apprentices so mechanics can stay at work. Only after all that is back to its original state do I see the big 4 hiring again from the list. How many spots out are you?

Wow thats crazy.. I'm only 12 spots away..

Re: Coronavirus Out of work? - 04/02/20 08:15 PM

Not in the Local but speaking to our state inspectors, the local laid off all first year apprentices because all construction was shut down in Boston, i think it ended up being a couple hundred workers getting laid off. Other than that all companies in the area here are still going strong in all other aspects. I did hear a rumor that I think a friend today confirmed was true that the local is sending around a petition to sign and send to the state to shutdown all construction in the entire state rather than letting city officials/mayors make the call when it comes to their city... and from my understanding a lot of the guys are signing. I can understand the seriousness of everything going on but at the same point that would result in a whole lot more workers getting laid off.... i guess if i was still one of the crews working i would prefer not to be laid off but thats just my opinion.

Yeah Rique, it could be a minute before you get on. But who knows, depends on how the GC's and owners handle it when we go back to work. Deadlines mean overtime, but everyone is already losing a lot of money.

Re: Coronavirus Out of work? - 04/03/20 04:04 AM

Here in TX there's approximately 240 counties. And 200 of them do not have any cases...they're mostly small populations. The Gov. Greg Abbott justified why a state lock down wouldn't benefit most of the state so he's leaving it to the major cities mayor and judges to determine the right course of action. Its working so far. In Houston (unofficial 3rs largest city in the US) Otis sent 4 mechanic and 6 helpers home. Kone/ Schindler is on reduce hour work week. TKE is day to day . Potentially going to reduce yours. As, this virus continues spreading, I can see the major cities locking down and enforcing curfews.. its definitely Humbling America. It's all in Devine order. Get fit, stay strong and support your own kitchen.

Re: Coronavirus Out of work? - 04/07/20 06:13 AM

Don’t know why the union would encourage having jobs shut down since we just entered an MOU agreement to help keep guys working. Might want to check into that a little better. Not to mention, I believe the new Agreement allows guys to furlough if they want to stop working due to virus concerns.

Colorado is open with exception of heavy metro population areas. Some resorts have said stay out!
We are working most of our crews and service team.
Anyone looking to get the heck out of the big city life hit me up we are always looking to grow the team!

What company do you work for?

Re: Coronavirus Out of work? - 04/10/20 06:37 PM

I agree, it didn't make sense to me to hear guys wanted construction shutdown - again we are a small non union shop and that's just what we have heard from state elevator inspectors and a few union guys - also heard it from a couple other workers in other locals. sounds like that whole movement didn't work though, so it may have been a small group pushing for it. Just thought it was interesting that was the rumor going around.
