This is a 1983 Escalator. Model SW40.
Does anyone have a way of testing brake torque? This does not have the standard Hex Head to put a torque wrench on.
My guys tell me there is a damping motor and belts that does not allow them to get a true reading.

the code requirement for escalators installed under A17.1b-1983 and later is, this brake must stop a down running escalator with a retardation not exceeding 3ft/s2 (o.91m/s2). This was a max rate. There is to be a data plate that specifies the required brake torque.

I agree John. Mechanic wants procedure in writing. His Service Company has not provided anything. Nobody wants to take responsiblity. Thanks

the1983 code did not apply at the time the escal. was approved for installation. There is no way to torque these units. We use the stopping distance measurement of less than two steps. It is adjusted by moving the weight on the brake release arm.
