Hey guys we are doing a mod and reusing the Otis 138 HT gearless machines. The 500 ft/min car is 2 to 1 and due to the fan of the cables going from the drop of the machine to the car sheave, the HW 624 rope gripper can't work properly. The guys tried to install the rope gripper in the overhead but the fan of the cables drags the rope gripper from one side of the shoe to the other shoe depending where the car is. Otis does make a sheave brake but it is proprietary and supposedly they won't sell it or it is at some outlandish price. My idea to fix this is to put raising beams under the machine in the machine room and then remount the rope gripper in the machine room in the normal manner. My raising beams would basically sit right on top of the existing machine beams. I am open to other ideas. Is there any third party company that makes a sheave brake. No matter how I deal with this it will be labor intensive and expensive. To do what I propose will involve having to re-rope the car but it would only be an issue on this first elevator.

Smitty,
We have a MOD coming up with the same issue. We intend to raise the machine and install the HW gripper between the drive and deflector. We also have two Westinghouse gearless machine we service with that very setup.

I am not sure if this one meets code. It is used in Europe a lot. It is called Sheave-Grip.

Holister + Whitney told me to put two L-angles back to back, then through bolt them, to make a rope sandwich of sorts, that keeps all the ropes in line with each other, at the top of the counterweight. That way, no one rope or ropes, can wear out the rope gripper shoe material.

Thanks for the info guys. I will check out the vertex model. The sheave brake model looks good too but the Otis machine doesn't have enough room on the machine side of the sheave to accommodate it. It is good to see some competition in the market for these devices.

Draka is promoting their new rope brake also. I haven't seen it yet but it maybe worth a look. Good Luck!

I just went through exactly what you are talking about see below for some pictures. ( I will take a few close ups of the finished product )

We looked on the market for a product that would work. We came to the conclusion that we had to suck it up and raise the machine!. We then added a 1" thick steel plate on the machine beams and 5/8 bolted (grade 5 or higher ) required and mounted the rope gripper to that. We ended up using 21" 8" I beams and had to weld gussets between the I beams as well as a few other gussets on the sheave side.

I will have to admit I was a little apprehensive about the ascending car test/125% roll away but everything was tickety boo. We spent weeks pissing around trying to find another sollution to this situation. We had 12 cars to raise and in the end we got it down to a fine art! We could raise the machine install the rope gripper done in under a day!

Good Luck!

Regards

Lepricon

Nice photos. I will try and get some of the photos I have taken of this mod posted. I pretty much had figured the beams were going to be the ticket but the office was hoping for a quick fix which was not going to happen. This is mod on a 1968 Otis Autotronic job. The job has had MRS selectors added, an EMO overlay as well as numerous home grown band aids and security overlays. It is one of the most convoluted jobs I have ever worked on from a wiring perspective. We are ripping all that stuff out and putting MCE Ibox controls in.The rope gripper should be an easy install on the rest of the machines since all the machines are having extensive refurbishing work.

I'm not familiar with the expression "tickety boo". But judging by the photo's it sounds like smooth sailing. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

That's a big job. Thanks for the pics...The only problem I see, is if you keep raising those machines, the buildings going to want you to put in another floor..LOL..

Good job..

It Don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing.

Ever install the Gripper on the cross head, OF A 2 TO 1. I've seen it done on a mod In New Brunswick, Canada. And it passed Government Inspection
