looking for any adjusting instructions for 1986/87 vintage Schindler Haughton door operators. Have an intermittent problem where car gets to a floor and doors don't open, and you apply the tiniest amount of pressure to the car doors, or you stick a drop key in the hoistway door and they will open right up. Can go all day and not do it, and then it will do it three times in a row.

I'll ask a Schindler/Haughton friend of mine. He's gonna ask me what operator it is? I've heard the car door relating cable needs to be the right diameter and/or can't have any grease or lube on it or it will slip.

I have an old AC traction unit that is from around that era. Can you provide any more info? Maybe a picture of the controller? Do you have a print?

Problem is I don't know the different types of all these Haughton/Schindler operators. Has the switch box with the 6 or 7 cams in it. I do have prints. Cannot take pictures inside this building. I have two other identical elevators in other parts of this building to compare to. This issue just started after the car was down for a week while a main breaker was replaced in the building. Never had any issue with the doors in here before. Just a coincidence because it's not related, just funny it started the day we fired it back up. I really want to go back thru and readjust all of the door operator settings but without instructions it's a guessing game. After 22+ years in this business I have collected info on most every brand/unit out there, except for Haughtons!

What I really want to know is.............how are the door operator cams lettered, front to back, or back to front. I know that "A" is the DCL and "B" is closed until 2" from open. I am thinking "B" is our problem as OPS is not pulling in when this happens, which in turn is not pulling in DT, which is not allowing OP to pull in and open the doors. My man pushes in on OPS when the situation occurs and we get OP. This is a T1-C operator.

The print I have doesn't have ops in a circuit. Although it sounds like you have the answers in front of you. May I suggest you place the car on inspection and move the car where you can observe the operator and manually open the doors. Turn off the power. Manually open and close the doors. Ring out the contacts with continuity. Then ring them back to the controller. You will likely find which cams are A, B, C, and D. And maybe why op isn't picking up.

Sometime we get so wrapped up we miss what is in front of us. Best of luck and let me know what you've found.

Make good choices,

I was helping one of my guys over the phone. Once I got a set of prints in my hand, I was able to guide him. One thing I have to say about Haughton prints is that they give you a ton of info. they even have the cam adjusting instructions in the right hand margin. I think we got it, was either a dirty "B" contact in the operator or a dirty n/c contact on CLS.

If the operator has just one belt it is probably the T 1 C. If it has three belts it is probably the TH operator which is the better of the two. The TH had a series field in the door motor. It is possible you have a dirty A or B contact which are indeed the two door limits. Everything else is slightly subjective although they did use to list the contact make break points on the straight lines area 40-49. Make sure you don't have a dirty CL 7-8 contact which is your interlocking contact. It is a common failure. The setup is similar for the T1c although it is generally regarded as a piece of crap. The common failure here is that the operator sheave wears out. One of the things we use to do was to slightly ream the 8/32 screws holding the music box so we could increase the followup on A and B contact.

Hey Smitty, After around 30 years with Haughton/Schindler Haughton. Boy you bring back memories. We used to ream the screws on the TH as well. Remember on the T1 the factory riveted the sheave bracket to the operator support.

Work Safe,

Jim

Yep I think part of working for Haughton was doing constant field retrofits. I know most people are all too happy to rip them out but it was the stuff I cut my teeth on so it makes me a bit sad. They did have the best prints in the industry.
