Client wants IP cameras in lift. Found this cable http://www.okidensen.co.jp/en/prod/cable/interface/hbcat5e_lan.html just wondering what others have used for this. Schindler say they do not have any thing available.

Client still wants IP cameras fitted so need to find suitable cable to run with trailing cable.
Cheers

We don't install the cameras. A local security shop brings a spool of their cable. They decide where to mount the camera in the car. We then pull it off the spool into the shaft to a midI-shaft junction box and to the car. That way we limit our involvement.

Make good choices,

What I have seen done in the past, and assisted in installation, is a camera that feeds it's signal back to the machine room via twisted pair or coax (whatever is available in the traveling cable). Then, the camera's feed is installed into a device that converts the signal to a digital feed that can be piped into the building's LAN backbone to whatever location is desired.

Unfortunately, at least in my jurisdiction, I have yet to come across a traveling cable that contains the necessary CAT5 wiring to facilitate this.

We've done many high end camera installations and the twisted shielded pair travelers have worked great. Is your client installing card readers for security as well? If so, I would recommend to hang a separate traveler to include cameras and the card reader. This way it's separate from the elevator controls and you can run the traveler all the way back to your security console (minimize slice points). Then just wire the individual wires to a CAT 5 adaptor or splice right to a pigtail connector.

Is a wireless system an option? They have about a 300' range.

another job where they have a cable taped to the travling cable that comes off after a few years and gets caught up on everything.

Yup... but I'm sure they'll ty-wrap it... lol

Had a job where this was done with coax... it looped and ended up hooking the traveller on a counter weight bracket... ripped it clean off of the car...

The simplest way out of this to connect an IP camera, if you have a coax in the traveller, is to use a balun at either end, fairly inexpensive units and does the trick. All you need to do is provide the power for the power for the camera.

going to go with another 6 core travelling cable and the OKI cat 5 flex we found. Laid and tied on the back of the existing trailing cable and as suggested up above try to keep the splice points to a minimum.

Draka is putting a lifetime warranty on cat and fiber purchase through them and installed utilizing the bobbin type hangers. We just received it in writing and are installing on a 20 plus floor construction job.

We can recommend elevator cables with shielded CCTV or shielded Cat5. Some security companies want to record the elevator with camera. If you use CCTV( Rg6) connection the cable should be connected to a recorder. You cant connect it to the internet directly. But if you use IP camera and CAT5 cable you can connect the camera directly to the internet.CAT5 cable should be flexible. A big international elevator company uses our cables at the elevators of 6 floor shopping mall
The special cables should be inside of the travelling cable. Otherwise their life is too short.

The problem with CAT cables is that it doesn't meet the minimum 20 gauge wire size required in an "ET" (Elevator Traveling Cable) rated cable and is not allowed by NFPA 70 Electrical code in the U.S.

So twisted pair in an ET rated cable is required by code.
