Some time ago the National Elevator Code and the Fire Safety Code would not allow the automatic starting of an elevator/escalator. Does anyone know if this has changed? Specifically remote starting.

Here is what is said in ASME a17.1 2010
The next issue would be 2013 and has yet to be available for purchase.

6.1.6.1.1 Automatic Operation. Automatic starting by any means, or automatic stopping, except as required in 6.1.6, shall be prohibited.

The "except as required" applies to automatic stopping. (Activation of safety switches)
