I'm preparing to write the intake test for my local union. I have found sample tests online for other trades and gone through them. I feel comfortable with that material, but I still have a few questions.
About the intake process...
1. Most posts I've read on VT say the intake test is pretty easy. I spoke with someone at the union and was told that during their last intake over 1000 people took the test and less than 50% were able to score above 70%. Are the people who fail just unprepared?
2. I'm most nervous about the interview following the intake test (assuming I pass). On average, how long is it after the intake test that these interviews take place?
3. I read online that the interview will also be scored. How is it scored and what types of questions will be asked? Also is there anything I can do now (two weeks out) to improve my chances at getting a higher score?
4. Currently 25 and have been working a desk job for the past 3 or so years. My only experience working in a hands on job is at an auto shop doing basic services (ie oil changes) about 5 or 6 years ago. Will this have any effect on my employability?
5. I've approached some journeyman about the chances of getting into the union and have had people tell me it is 100% based on nepotism. Is there any truth to this? I'm applying to local 50 in Toronto. The process appears to be pretty objective, but I can't say for sure.
About the job/union...
1. Are the union scale rates the minimum limits for remuneration or the average/standard?
2. If and when I get into the union and begin an apprenticeship, am I bound to local 50 for the remainder of my apprenticeship or is there some freedom to move around?
3. In terms of finding jobs, once you are a journeyman, do you look for jobs on your own or do you just wait until the union calls you with an available opening? For example, if Otis is hiring, do you apply directly to Otis?
4. Are there opportunities for people to branch out into starting their own companies in the way electricians do?
I have more questions, but I'll leave at this for now.
