Looking to see if someone has ran across this before and what was the best practice. We have a Montgomery dry pump unit that was shutting down with low oil. The silencer had a catastrophic failure. We replaced the muffler and cleaned the valve, tank and pipes. Packing was not leaking or seeping, we did not pull the piston. Once put back together it seems to run fine and then just starts shutting down again on low oil. While pump is running and both up valves are energized the pressure is 150, close the shut off valve and it immediately goes to the relief setting of 420. Open the shut off valve and the elevator takes off for maybe two runs before doing it again. A little stumped. I wold not think that if a spring or something else was in the jack this would be the issue?

Montgomery had a muffler that would break apart internally. Pieces would get into the system and wreak havoc. The fix was to add a screened clean out to the to the line. Then periodically remove the debris. Over time the system was cleaned. After this happened, all the units with that particular Muffler were replaced before they broke up.

No, these were not pressurized. Just straight welded pipe mufflers maybe 4” - 6” dia. Usually on Miprom 1 to Miprom SL vintage. Dry and submersible units. What a mess! We drained the tank and as much as the jack as possible and replaced the valve. I like the screened clean out idea, like a Y filter? I can’t imagine getting by without replacing the valve though, the goo was literally everywhere when we took it all apart.

It is of course a *&$(&$% SL. Thank goodness that is not the problem. I am having trouble thinking of what could still be the issue. We can not turn it over for use like this to put a filter on it.

It has got to be that there is still debris from the earlier silencer failure still in the system. Somethings got to still be in there. New valve, and filter entire system again.

I would also but your filter pump in the tank. (both in and out) and run it as long as you can on the old valve before you add the filter. No other way to go but adding the filter to keep it from happening over and over.
