Has anyone installed one of G.A.L.‘s Schindler 330 a IDD door operator retrofit/upgrade kit. How did it go. If you have pictures of the finished product that would be great. Especially of the adapter bracket for the motor.

This is a great option, very easy. I only have pictures of the one I did before GAL made a kit for it though so it has a separate tensioning bracket to hold the motor.

A guy I work with did one. He said it was pretty easy and had only been a mechanic for less than a year at that point.

Two suggestions to make the job even easier. One would be just to remove original motor and belt. Then buy the MONXT-OMNI. The same one used to upgrade Otis operators such as black belt. Mount on top of existing operator with belts and motor (original) removed. Last use the mounting bar to connect it between MONXT belt and physical door panel. This is more of a simple drop-in replacement Unlike the MOVFE replacement, you do not have to remove any decommissioned sensors, nor install new ones and OMNI is totally encoder based, just like SmarTraq. All other door equipment can be retained (clutch, rollers, etc).

2. Although new to the industry, GAL now has an operator called MOVFR3, which is made similar to the MCE SmarTraq, but more reliable. It eliminates cams and the control box can be mounted anywhere, you should be able to just order the motor and controller for the MOVFR3 without having to buy the entire operator. Also, you will need to order the QKS/IDD mounting motor bracket as the motor is the same make and model as the MOVFE one, however, there are no limit switches to install as it works on the same principle as the SmarTraq, unlike the MOVFE. All decommed limit sensors can just remain in place even though they are no longer needed.

You could also use an MCE SmarTraq w/the GAL mounting motor bracket.

The SmarTraq is garbage in my opinion and I don’t think the MOVFR swap could get much easier with the direct mount motor bracket and retaining sheaves and belts. I’m not sure doing away with physical limits is an improvement.

Thank God Schindler switched to Fermator and Sematic. Both are way way better than GAL. The problem with GAL is that they still do it the old fashion way with mechanical link arms. All other companies discontinued production of harmonic operators. I never did like Harmonic operators. I like the European style linear best.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I like the movfr2 operators and have put them on many cars that were not designed to have them. Really only one measurement maters (in and out) the rest just have to be close to make them work and work well. They're a known quantity, easily adjustable, fairly reliable, and parts are available. That being said, new gal stuff has been a bit lacking in quality control and their support is not great anymore.
