Why did the ancient ones test Otis Touch Buttons with a rag or handkerchief on their finger?

Remove the tenite cover from the touch tube detector and touch it. Or touch a can in the car panel. You'll get it after that.

I did pretty good in those circuits till the inevitable 1st hit. Then that little bit of shake in your hands would start. After about the 4th hit or so. I had to walk away to calm down to try it again.

Wouldn't enough juice to really hurt you, but you would hurt yourself getting away from it.
