The safety edge has a very basic function. When something blocks the recievers view of the light ray transmitter, the safety edge sends a signal to the elevator controller to stop the doors from closing and then re-open the doors.
If your doors are closing with an obstruction in the safety edges view, it could mean you need a new safety edge. But there maybe something else going on as well. I recommend you have a licensed & insured elevator service company come and trace out your trouble and make the nessasary repairs. Keep in mind that you have acknowledged a safety issue with your equipment.
