Hey everyone, on more than one occasion I've been told by an inspector that the door open button needs to be located on the opening side of the aux. C.O.P. I was looking for this code in the ASME and ADA requirements but have found nothing on this requirement. Do any of you code pros know where they're getting this requirement? Any help is greatly appreciated.

never seen or heard of that one. is this a state inspector? when will the lawyers figure out that if you are too blind to find a button you shouldn't be riding an elevator without assistance. its a danger to themselves more than anything. we had a fully blind guy that rode and escalator and tripped and tried to sue us because he said he couldn't find the elevator so he was forced to ride the escalator. crazy world we live in.

That's a good one! It doesn't surprise me though. So many people are looking to sue for ridiculous reasons.
I believe the door open button deal has to do with maximum reach distances if a person is in a wheel chair in a center opening elevator. It is standard that the door open button is on the left side on a main panel if the COP is on the right on a center opening car. If a center opening car has an aux. COP on the left the door open button should be on the right. This has been brought up by inspectors in OC and San Diego, both state inspectors. Are the majors using this practice as a standard or do both main and aux. panels have the DO button on the left?

The door opening button is not required to be on a designated "side" it is just required to be there. ADA has height restrictions associated to reach ability. If there is a door open button on both main and auxiliary sides they both must work in all situations (normal service and fire service).
