Does anyone have a good hydraulic pipe company. That will cut schedule 80 and groove it and or thread it to custom lengths ?

Before our shop had a pipe threader and roll groover we would have some of ours done at the local fire sprinkler contractor or at the local machine shop. Years ago Ferguson would do custom pipe jobs also. Roll groove sch 40. Cut groove sch 80. Had an oil line break on an annual CAT1 relief valve test. Found that the schedule 40 oil line pipe had been cut grooved.

Do yall not do enough install work to justify buying your own equipment? I've ran so much pipe I'd qualify as a sprinkler guy and I'd recommend always cutting each piece as you put the last piece on and measure one at a time. Trying to predone measurements is a good way to have your union not line up when your done and have to do work twice.


If its 1/2" or 3/4" pipe I'd recommend a racheting hand threader and Tristand chain vise to hold the pipe. (Harbor freight or your local pipe supplier for name brand)

If its 2" or bigger I'd recommend using a motorized Tristand with a hydraulic groove that rolls the groove into it. Cutting the groove is a pain in the butt and finicky, and weakens the pipe, and is slower. You can rent piping machines also.

By the way, schedule 80 is thicker walled, but the OD is the same. The ID is smaller.

DONT FORGET, if your using schedule 80 pipe you must accompany it with all schedule 80 close nipples and class 3000 fittings. Piping is like a chain, its the weakest link that blows up.


And my last thought, if your ever doing a very critical threaded connection that must not leak, Expando is the only way to go. If you use Expando you must let it dry for 24 hours before putting pressure on it. If you do, I've never seen one Expando'd joint leak, ever.

What brand roll groover do you use for schedule 80?

Yes Blue Monster is the way to go.

As the others have said, it would be a pain to order the pipe precut and grooved or threaded. Well worth the investment in a threader and groover.

You should not be subbing out grooving or threading pipe, if everybody here is union, we all know that is our work, that’s one of the easiest jobs to do if your setup to do it, I started doing it when I was a probationary after a 5 min class from the mechanic, my company would try to give us pipe pre-rolled, we would cut it off and do it ourself, buy or rent a ridgid combo, that’s what we got, think about it, if you have a leak down the road and you gotta replace a vic or redo a thread, you think the customer is going to blame someone that was outsourced to groove or thread the pipe, or the company that installed it.

Why would you roll schedule 80? I mean if your using schedule 80 I would thread it and use the heavy walled fittings. Maybe someone here's used vics with schedule 80 before but I'd be interested to see if the vic couplings and elbows are rated for that level of pressure. Vics on schedule 80 seems a little asinine to me.

Sch 80 can't be rolled. It must be grooved or threaded. Vic fittings of the correct type are rated for use with sch. 80 seamless tubing. (pipe)
