I’m looking for opinions on the pros and cons of Canton Elevators roped hydraulic elevator. Is there anything I should be aware of?

Use the search feature on this one, someone asked this awhile ago and I gave pretty detailed answers on it. Overall they are good solid units. But they make several versions and the cantilevered versions had bouncing ride quality issues. The pit mounted governors are a nightmare to test and are begging for water to ruin them. If you got the quality mechanics to install them (or you) the roped hydros with the jacks on the side are good to go for the most part. But one of those I put in also had issues with the governor (Hollister Whitney in overhead in that case) tripping if the car stops to quickly, too sensitive , releasing carrier not dampening car movement well to gov rope. Have to leave that car on painfully slow leveling speed on inspection. The cantilevered cars were worse for tripping the governor and couple that with a bouncy car to start with and you get drunk folks trapped in it from being too rowdy riding in it . If you do side jacks you MUST use expando on the pipes that thread in the bottom of the casing and runs through the upstands and plan on using scaffolding. I'm a die hard ladder mechanic. I loath seeing mechanics use scaffolding when a ladders 3 times faster. But in this case threading them cylinders and pistons together hanging in the air, yeah scaffolding is definitely worth it

Invest in a good pipe clamp or Jerry rig some v notched 4x4 or 6x6s, and 2 good strap wrenches. Rigid makes some monster strap wrenches.

Honestly, they fill a niche. But unless there's a reason you can't drill, you'll probably be better off with a regular in ground hydro. Then you don't need any roped (way more labor and equipment, you now add safeties and 5 year testing) and you don't have to deal with telescopic jacks to have to eventually rebuild if you went that route. The in grounds can do any capacity or rise with no equipment drawbacks

Just to note, I was a mechanic installing all the canton roped hydros I did. If I was the boss I probably would've installed ingrounds.

But I would recommend Canton. Even in a telescopic jack or inground. They are top notch quality packages. Installing canton reminds you of the good old days when things were made from metal and built to last. They are the opposite of the modern filing cabinet mrls. Canton builds quality stuff that's just simple and how it's supposed to be.

Canton makes the good stuff no doubt. We are lucky in that we have the false car platform and did not have to do the jacks off of a ladder or scaffolding. That would be the scary and more difficult. We have only used the pit mounted gov and have not had one single issue. We do maintain one with the overhead gov and no issue their either. Also, never seen one of the cantilevered one, so no input there.

EElevator, thank you for all of your input. I did go back and read up on you previous post. I am also a fan of Virginia Controls.

Solidstate, we also use a false car. Way better then the things we did back in the day!

Elevatorguy128, in a previous post on this subject you said “ make sure to use roller guides, not slide guides”! Why?

That's how I feel about the Alliance Elevator Solutions package. Heavy duty car frame, heavy duty platform, GAL door equipment, Innovation fixtures, smartrise controller. Probably will go with the Virginia controller next round.

Alliance makes good stuff too. We did one last year with MEI and courion doors and a vertitron controller. More good solid stuff. Lots of good options out there I feel like.
