Recently completed Otis to TKE MOD

Hi Gang,

Just thought I would pass on some pictures of a mod I just wrapped up.

Old Equipment:

Otis 131HT Machines
Otis VIP 260 with a good ole MG set
Otis 6970 door operator

New:

Otis 131HT machines ( refurbished )
TKE Tac 50-04 with PWM 10K drive Gov/Motor encoders
Hollister Whitney 624 rope gripper
Dover HDLM door operator

In Canada we have to have rope grippers when we complete a major alteration (MOD ) or have parallel main brakes that can stop 125% rated load independent of each other. In the past we used to mount the rope grippers upside down at the top of the hoistway. The government inspector had us remove it and install it up in the machine room. He called it because it was not "serviceable" This was a right pain in the ass to raise these machines. The next MOD I am supposed to run we will have to raise Otis 219HT machines up to accommodate a rope gripper . YUK!

YUK! interesting. why do you have to have 2 brakes independant of each other? if control is designed properly why would you need to have 2 brakes?

Once you mod any old equipment they must be brought up to today's code. i would of thought that if the lift had unintended motion that a lift would stop even with 1 or 2 brakes.i would hope we dont go down this way. there have been some rope grippers installed and i had to walk 27 flights to reset 2 grippers when a power failure occured. also are new lifts required to have these 2nd brakes installed? Smitty bangyourheadhere S Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 220 Annapolis Md.	It is interesting that a lot of our current US codes have been in Canada's code for quite some time. I remember visiting my father who was a supervisor for then Dover Elevator in Toronto. I was a field adjuster for Schindler Haughton at the time. Anyhow, this was back in the mid 90's. and I remember seeing some of the gearless machines with dual brakes as well as the Bode brake used on geared machines. It was also odd seeing the rather small looking but 600 volt main line disconnects. Last edited by Smitty; 05/22/12 03:40 AM.
