1. First, Understand This: The Escalator Brand Is Not Necessarily the Handrail Brand

Escalator handrails are mainly divided into rubber handrails and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) handrails. Rubber handrails remain widely used in the market, supported by mature manufacturing processes and extensive application experience.

For buyers, there is an important point that is often overlooked: the brand of an escalator does not necessarily indicate who manufactures its handrails.

Both major escalator manufacturers and independent maintenance companies may source handrails from different specialized manufacturers. The choice of supplier depends on various factors, including purchasing strategies, project requirements, product specifications, supply chain arrangements, and delivery schedules.

Therefore, knowing the escalator brand alone is not enough when purchasing rubber handrails. Buyers also need to understand the actual manufacturer, product grade, quality control capabilities, and supply channels.

So, which rubber handrail brands are worth considering in today's market, and how do they compare in terms of quality?

2. Major Global Rubber Handrail Brands and Quality Tiers

Based on our industry experience, rubber handrail suppliers can be classified into different tiers according to manufacturing technology, product consistency, market recognition, and market positioning.

Tier 1: EHC and Semperit

EHC and Semperit are established manufacturers in the escalator handrail industry, with extensive experience and a strong technical background.

1. EHC

EHC is a long-established supplier in the specialized handrail market.

Its product quality has earned strong recognition in the market over the years, and the company has also been a pioneer in TPU handrail development.

However, EHC appears to have shifted some of its focus toward other business areas in recent times. Based on our market experience, this may affect customer response times, order lead times, and after-sales coordination in certain cases.

For buyers, it is therefore advisable to confirm stock availability, production schedules, and delivery commitments before placing an order, especially when project deadlines are tight.

2. Semperit

Semperit is a well-known company in the rubber and polymer industry and is widely recognized in the global escalator handrail market.

Its strengths include long-standing manufacturing experience, product technology, and an established market reputation. For buyers who prioritize consistent quality, reliable operation, and long-term performance, Semperit is a brand worth considering.

Based on our market experience, Semperit has a strong presence in China's escalator handrail market and is a familiar name to many buyers.

However, there is an important point to be aware of. In September 2026, Semperit introduced a sub-brand aimed specifically at China's domestic maintenance market. According to our market information, this product line is positioned at a lower price point and a different quality level.

Some exporters may present products from this sub-brand as standard Semperit products without clearly explaining the difference. Buyers should therefore verify the exact product series and manufacturing source before purchasing.

Semperit's TPU handrails have not yet entered production, according to our current market information. The company has, however, developed a new rubber handrail designed to prevent black residue from forming on the surface.

Tier 2: SKG

SKG is a Chinese manufacturer worth considering in the rubber escalator handrail market.

According to the industry information available to us, SKG's core technical team comes from Semperit. This background is one reason why SKG's product quality is considered close to that of Semperit in our market assessment.

SKG is also developing TPU handrails, although these products have not yet officially entered production.

One of SKG's main advantages is its balance between product quality and price.

Based on our market quotations and purchasing experience, SKG can be approximately 25%–35% less expensive than Semperit when comparable products and trading conditions are considered. Actual price differences depend on the model, specifications, order quantity, delivery terms, and product series.

For maintenance companies, spare parts distributors, and project contractors looking to control purchasing costs without making excessive compromises on quality, SKG is worth considering.

Tier 3: Nanlong

Nanlong is a Chinese supplier with an established presence in the domestic escalator handrail market.

Based on our market experience, Nanlong mainly serves China's domestic maintenance market, and its products can meet the requirements of many routine maintenance and replacement applications.

From a purchasing perspective, Nanlong may be an option for buyers seeking a balance between cost and practical application requirements.

However, in our experience, the quality of Nanlong's handrail jointing materials is relatively average. For buyers purchasing handrails in large coils that need to be cut and joined on-site, Nanlong's jointing materials are generally not our preferred choice.

Buyers planning to join handrails on-site should pay particular attention to the quality and compatibility of the jointing materials, as well as the reliability of the finished joint.

Tier 4: Other Brands and Less Established Suppliers

Beyond the brands mentioned above, the market includes various other rubber handrail brands, regional manufacturers, and suppliers.

Product quality can vary considerably across this segment. Some suppliers may offer products that meet specific project requirements, while others may have less predictable batch consistency, material control, or long-term operating performance.

We therefore recommend looking beyond price alone when evaluating these products.

The main concern is not simply whether a brand is well known. Buyers should be cautious when a supplier cannot clearly explain the product's origin, quality standards, and batch control procedures.

3. Why Is Consistent Rubber Handrail Quality So Important?

One issue that buyers sometimes overlook when purchasing rubber handrails is consistency between production batches.

A product that performs well in one batch does not automatically guarantee the same performance in the next.

Differences in raw material formulations, mixing processes, vulcanization, or manufacturing controls may affect the handrail's surface condition, odor, wear resistance, and long-term performance.

Buyers should pay attention to the following potential issues.

1. Surface Discoloration or Black Residue

If a handrail leaves excessive black residue on the hands during normal use, further inspection of its material properties, surface condition, and manufacturing quality may be necessary.

However, rubber compounds commonly contain carbon black and other ingredients, so the presence of black marks alone does not prove that a product is defective. The degree of residue, whether it is abnormal, and whether the product meets its specified requirements should all be considered.

2. Strong or Unusual Odors

If a newly installed handrail has a strong, persistent, or irritating odor, buyers should ask the supplier to investigate the raw materials, manufacturing process, and relevant quality issues.

Odor alone does not establish that a product is non-compliant or contains harmful substances. Nevertheless, an unusual odor should be investigated rather than ignored.

3. Abnormal Debris During Operation

If a handrail continuously produces unusual black particles during operation, possible causes may include material wear, surface damage, friction between the handrail and guide components, installation conditions, or operating conditions.

These issues can increase cleaning and maintenance requirements and may also undermine customer confidence in the product.

4. Significant Differences Between Production Batches

This is particularly important for buyers to consider.

One batch may perform normally, while a subsequent batch may develop excessive surface residue, unusual odors, or accelerated wear.

For distributors and maintenance companies serving multiple projects, this uncertainty can lead to additional maintenance costs, customer complaints, and supply chain management difficulties.

Consistent quality from batch to batch is often more important than obtaining the lowest price on a single purchase.

4. How to Choose the Right Rubber Handrail Supplier

For escalator maintenance companies, spare parts distributors, and other industry professionals, we recommend evaluating suppliers based on the following factors.

First, verify the actual manufacturing source.

Do not focus solely on the brand name. Confirm who manufactures the specific model, where it is produced, and whether the supplier can provide the relevant product documentation.

Second, compare specific products rather than brand names alone.

Different brands and product series may have different specifications and market positioning. When comparing prices, make sure the dimensions, construction, technical requirements, delivery terms, and quality documentation are reasonably comparable.

Third, pay attention to batch consistency.

In addition to evaluating the initial order, buyers should monitor the consistency of subsequent batches. Request appropriate quality inspection records and establish procedures for incoming inspection and feedback from actual use.

Fourth, evaluate the total cost of ownership.

The purchase price is only one part of the overall cost. Transportation, installation, maintenance, rework, and potential quality-related risks should also be considered.

For escalators in long-term operation, a lower purchase price does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost.

Fifth, choose a supplier according to the project requirements.

For projects with demanding quality requirements, long operating hours, or high maintenance costs, product reliability and quality control should take priority.

For routine replacement projects, buyers can compare prices and delivery times once the products have been confirmed to meet the required technical specifications.

5. Conclusion: Do Not Choose Rubber Handrails Based on Brand and Price Alone

The global rubber escalator handrail market includes manufacturers and suppliers with different levels of technology, quality positioning, and market focus. EHC, Semperit, SKG, Nanlong, and other brands should all be evaluated in the context of the specific product, application, and purchasing requirements.

For buyers, the most important questions are not simply which brand has the strongest reputation, but rather:

Does the product meet the technical requirements of the intended application?
Can the supplier consistently deliver reliable product quality?
Are the price, delivery time, and long-term operating costs reasonable?

In the escalator spare parts industry, reliable sourcing, clear product information, and consistent quality control are essential foundations for long-term business relationships.

TPU Escalator Handrail Brands and Market Landscape

Unlike the rubber handrail market, the TPU handrail market is currently relatively concentrated, with suppliers generally divided into the following three tiers.

Tier 1: EHC

EHC is currently the main supplier of TPU escalator handrails worldwide and a leading brand in this market segment.

At present, TPU handrails used by escalator OEMs worldwide are supplied by EHC. EHC holds a leading position in the TPU handrail market and is the first brand buyers should consider when sourcing TPU escalator handrails.

Tier 2: Twinikel

Twinikel is another brand worth noting in the TPU handrail market.

Previously, Twinikel had the potential to challenge EHC's leading position in the TPU handrail market. However, it ultimately failed to secure any orders from escalator OEMs.

As a result, Twinikel's current business is mainly focused on the maintenance and replacement market, and it has not entered the supply chains of escalator OEMs.

Tier 3: Other TPU Handrail Manufacturers

In addition to EHC and Twinikel, other manufacturers also produce TPU escalator handrails.

Based on our market experience, these manufacturers offer less assurance in terms of quality control and product consistency. Buyers should therefore pay particular attention to product quality, batch-to-batch consistency, and actual performance in service when considering these products.

For projects with high quality requirements, we do not recommend choosing these products based on low prices alone.
