In the old days, you learned a little from the mechanics of the day, if you wanted to know more, you had to study on your own, not just a couple of hours here and there, but a full time obligation to gather as much elevator knowledge as you could. You did this because you wanted to be the best damn elevator man you could be. You wanted the older, seasoned mechanics to notice you, you wanted the boss to notice you, you wanted the trade to notice you. unfortunately those days are gone, even if neiep offered the most elaborate training known to man, the young guys of our trade have no inspiration to learn more, they pass the mechanics exam, take the great pay and benefits, and expect that they should be worshipped for the great men they are. Only problem is, 90 percent of them don't know how to use a meter , could not read a print to save there life, and spend most of the day bitching about how terrible they are being treated. The old great elevator men are disappearing rapidly, it will be up to you young men to treat your trade with respect, just passing the mechanic exam will not suffice. Only you, and You Know Who You are, can make this a great trade and and a great Union for years to come. I have seen far to many new hires impress the bosses with tales of how they can fix any controller at any time, The problem is, it is only talk. I have been a union elevator man for 27 years, and am grateful for this great trade and way of life, lets not let it go to Crap, and let the non union companies take over the trade.. again it is not up to us that are ready to retire, it is up to you guys that are just starting. Lets put a little pride in our work and our trade.
