In my home state, California, the requirement is that the switch trip at no more than 150# vertical (left, right, center) and Horizontally no more than 400# (left, right) and no more than 800# (center). Top and bottom.
I have seen the method you describe, and its all fun and games till the glass balastrade breaks in tiny little pieces or the board across the top of the balastrade slips and hits some one in the head.
Kone sells a POS lightweight hydraulic unit.
www.stoplossresources.net makes a much nicer one that is a lot quicker to set up and do.
You don't always get what you pay for, but you always pay for what you get. I would recommend the stop loss product.
