Hello everyone,

We have a 2stop unit that is continually blowing out the packings. Unit was installed in 2001 and this issue just began about 9months ago. We have even used a Texacone Damaged Piston Packing, that only lasted 3months. If anyone has any thoughts it would be greatly appreciated. I have thought about removing the piston to do a thorough check for possible unseen damage or imperfections.

Is the packing getting chewed up or is it just blowing out? Is it an older inverted Dover piston ? Do you have any pictures?

yea definitely need more info on piston and clairification on if the packing is "Blowing" or getting chewed up. When you say offset you mean with the piston upside down or twin piston, or even the dover where the piston is mounted more in the front behind the return/cop wall

pics would help alot too

It is just blowing. No visible damage.

Cylinder is mounted in the front.

Without seeing it or asking 10 mill questions I'd start by putting a level on the piston. I have seen the. Shift before and cause everything from a hard knock to pissing out oil. The next thing is check is how glazed over or shiney the piston is. If it's so smooth it looks and feels like it's chromed that can also cause it to start leaking after a while. The piston should have very small cross hatches that carry a small amount of oil to lubricate the seal. I've had very old pistons that were super smooth that wouldnt seal, especially in the down direction. After inspecting the piston and finding no real problems we sanded the entire piston. (7 stop 6" piston) It didn't stop the leaking 100% but it cut it back by about 75%.

Thank you
We will check these issues.

What grit did you use to sand the piston?
